Home and Design Awards 2014

This was an interesting week in the Ottawa Home Building industry as awards were distributed last weekend in recognition of excellence in a variety of categories at the Housing Design Awards.
It would appear that groups with well established reputations and recognition appear to dominate the awards this year.
Amsted won renovator of the year and has done this in years past. They are well known design/builders in Ottawa and have previous awards for Renovator of the Year as well as having won awards for their efforts in the category of “Green Renovations”. This years award was for a property they transformed in the Island Park area and was a collaboration with multiple award winner Chuck Mills Residential Design and Development.
In the area of Kitchens and Bathrooms there are always a few ways to go so the categories are broken down into “production” and “custom” kitchen and baths.
Deslaurier Custom Cabinets won in several of the “production” categories in both kitchen and bath categories.
Winners in the Custom Kitchen categories are repeat winners from years past. Design First Kitchens won in the Custom Kitchen category for a kitchen 191-219 sq ft while Astro Design Centre took the prize for a custom Kitchen of 159 sq ft or less.
Potvin Construction was also recognized in this category in the scale of 160-190 sq ft.
So if you are considering renovations these are all reputable performers whose creativity is evident.
In the infill category the award went to Roca Homes and partnering architect Barry Hobin for their sleek, and beautifully detailed projects dotted in many of Ottawa’s desirable neighbourhoods. Roca was also named Custom Builder of the year and this is no surprise. Since arriving on the scene in 2006 Roca has established itself as a fine and innovative builder with a list of beautiful projects across the city, from Rockcliffe Park to Old Ottawa South and Whitehaven. Walls of glass allowing natural surroundings to be one with the interior is a hallmark. Contemporary and timeless, their projects appeal to all ages, but those with large pocket books only need apply.
All this says to the rest of us mere mortals that there are outstanding options for everyone in Ottawa no matter the scale of your project and you can be assured of not only a creative outcome but a quality finish if you use any of these award winning resources.
Ottawa is a beautiful city and continues to mature and evolve in design, taste and architecture making it a very interesting place to live!
